Aubrey's Bio
|
Listen
to Back to Me, the debut CD from
Aubrey Collins, and get ready for big surprises. The first surprise is
that this Denver, Colorado, artist has miraculously combined the vocal
charms of Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Jewel into a gutsy, singular
new voice.
The second shocker? This triple-threat singer/songwriter/guitarist with
the pure, pop-country voice is only 15. “It’s funny,” Collins says
in a perky speaking voice that reflects her age. “When people hear me
sing, they can’t believe it’s me: ‘You sound like you’re 20.’
I hear that all the time.”
The
music on Back
to Me – half of it written by Collins herself – is also
surprisingly mature. The songs reveal an artist with a seasoned grasp of
the finer points of country-flavored hits perfect for twenty- and
thirty-something audiences.
Back
to Me’s tunes brim with brainy pop touches, irresistible hooks and
a heartfelt rootsiness that echoes Collins’ crossover focus and
musical affections. “I grew up singing blues, country and rock,”
Collins says. “I’ve always liked the themes of those kinds of music
and the way my voice gets a big, juicy tone singing them.”
Collins’
songwriting skills are just as rich. Standouts on Back
to Me include “Anywhere She Dreams,” a heartland
crossover number sure to thrill CMT and TNN audiences, and the yearning,
mid-tempo ache of “Back to Me,” the CD’s title track. “With
You” is a sparse lament featuring the breathier, softer side of
Collins’ vocal range (look out, Faith Hill), while “Every Mom’s
Dream” is highlighted by a sticky chorus and Collins’ gifts for
covering adult themes despite her age.
Adding
to the CD’s appeal is the cast of Nashville heavyweights (supporting
players for Shania Twain, Brad Paisley, Deana Carter and others) that
appear on the recording. Recorded in Music City’s acclaimed Dog Den
studio, Back
to Me is a masterful collection of smart, radio-ready songs
that rival those of Collins’ musical heroes.
Being around top-notch musicians is nothing new for Collins, who played
her first gig at age four. Since then, she’s performed around the
United States at everything from festivals and professional sporting
events to some of the world’s toughest talent competitions. At nine,
Collins represented the U.S. in the World Championships of Performing
Arts (held each year in Los Angeles) and won gold medals in both the pop
and country categories. She went on to win fifteen WCPA medals over the
next four years, including ten gold medals and one overall trophy.
“They’ve really helped me get the confidence to connect
with my audience,” Collins says of her competition wins. Even if
earning them meant forgoing the activities that young women her age
typically pursue. “I haven’t missed out on anything,” Collins
says. “My music is a lot more important than movies, the mall and
shopping.”
Over
the past year Collins has wowed crowds and music industry people in both
Los Angeles and Nashville, where she’s pursuing a major label record
deal. Her list of Nashville showcase gigs includes the County Music Hall
of Fame Lounge, Tin Pan South, the Golden Music Awards and other shows.
Collins’ list of big name believers is also growing. Michael Delaney
has written hits for Faith Hill (“The Way You Love Me”), Reba
McIntyre and others artists, he’s an Aubrey Collins fan. “It’s
rare to see anyone – in Nashville, New York or Los Angles – with the
focus she has at her age,” Delaney says of Collins. “That focus and
her talent almost guarantee that Aubrey will be a big success.”
After hearing her perform at an artist showcase, David Preston, BMI
Nashville’s Director of Writer & Publisher Relations told Aubrey,
“If I had a record label I’d sign you on the spot.”
Getting signed is exactly what Collins is after. Her debut is being
shopped to the nation’s biggest labels, and she’s launching a
national press and radio campaign to get Back
to Me before industry types and the public. On August 26, Back to Me is being released
at www.aubreycollins.com,
the disc is now heading to select stores in Colorado and the United
States.
“I
want more fans to know my music,” Collins says. “It makes me a
better person by connecting with people and touching them with my
music.”
Those
sentiments emphasize the fact that Aubrey Collins is a young talent
beyond her years. “Not every fifteen-year-old is at my level,”
Collins says in a whopping understatement. “Sometimes my age is a
plus. But other times it’s not, and people don’t take me seriously.
I’m out to change that with my new record.”
And if the path to national recognition is a tough one, Collins isn’t
worried. “A lot of people have told me it’s a long hard road, and
that’s what makes me want to keep going,” she says. “I want to see
how hard it is, because, actually, I’m having the best time ever doing
it. The thrill of songwriting, playing guitar and singing to people,
that’s what keeps me going.”
